Brightview Senior Living Receives Prestigious ALFA Best of the Best Award
May 1, 2010Baltimore, MD

Assisted Living Federation of America national award recognizes innovative best practices.

The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) has awarded Baltimore’s Brightview Senior Living its prestigious 2010 Best of the Best Award, a national recognition reserved for the nation's most innovative and effective business practices in the senior living industry. The company is one of only 25 companies to receive a Best of the Best Award this year. All 2010 winners will be profiled in the May/June issue of ALFA’s flagship magazine, Assisted Living Executive.

“These innovations recognize companies that have put their imaginations to work to continually improve and streamline operations, enhance resident care and services, train and retain quality employees, and much more,” says ALFA President and CEO Richard P. Grimes. “Plus, the industry-wide benefit of the Best of the Best Awards is the program’s ability to multiply excellence as these and other companies in senior living adopt these best practices as their own.”

Brightview Senior Living was recognized for its Leader-Led Star Coaching program, a new approach to employee performance reviews. In place of a reactive performance evaluation process, Leader-Led Star Coaching has established a non-punitive process that reinforces good behaviors throughout the year, offers associates a chance to identify their own solutions when improvement is needed, and results in a clearer snapshot of associates’ individual and collective performance during the annual review.

This more proactive “coaching” model happens all year long and culminates in a single annual review date for all associates. This approach empowers leaders to have proactive discussions with associates using positive problem-solving language.

The change contributed to a 91 percent retention rate of highest-rated performers last year as well as 100 percent reduction in unacceptable ratings for associates. “This process gave people the tools to give feedback, to be more candid, than they ever felt they could before,” says Andrea Griesmar, Brightview’s vice president of human resources.

For details about each winning strategy, see the cover story of Assisted Living Executive’s May/June 2010 issue, or contact Marlene Hendrickson (mhendrickson@alfa.org). The ALFA 2010 Best of the Best Award winners will also be recognized at the ALFA 2010 Conference & Expo, May 25-27, in Phoenix.
