Meet our STARS

At Brightview, our core values – STARS – are more than just words on a page. The STARS principles guide our interactions with co-workers, residents and business partners; influence the way that we do our jobs; and inspire us to deliver exceptional service to both internal and external customers. Associates in all of our communities are eligible to receive monthly or quarterly STARS awards and from that group of community winners, we select five individuals to receive our coveted annual STARS awards. Recipients of the awards and their guests were invited to attend our annual leadership conference in Cambridge, Maryland, to receive their awards. Meet our STARS below and hear their Brightview stories.

Brian Doyle, STARS Story of the Year

Brian Doyle 2010

Brian Doyle, bus driver at Brightview Baldwin Park, exemplifies Vibrant Engagement.  With compassion, kindness and exemplary customer service, Brian drives the bus each day and is a loving friend to the residents.  With the same care and empathy for his bus passengers, Brian is always there to lend a hand. Far beyond his role as bus driver -- Brian’s demonstrated expertise in several areas beyond his primary responsibilities, coupled with his overwhelming willingness to assist, have made him invaluable to the residents at the community and to his colleagues. He has worked in several capacities: electrician, IT guru and coach, using his skills and abilities to help others and problem solve.

Without boosting or bragging, Brian leads by example.  When an electrical issue plagued the bus recently, Brian used his knowledge from a past work experience as a Naval electrician to repair the problem himself.  Residents were delighted that their scheduled outings were not interrupted as Brian fixed the issue after hours, when he was off-the-clock.  When computer issues confound associates at the community, Brian eagerly assists, troubleshooting and fixing problems, and creating useful documents that save time.  Brian helps residents at Baldwin Park with their personal computers as well, installing programs, offering assistance or explaining unfamiliar technology.  With his technical savvy, Brian even helps residents with other appliances and devices.  Residents take comfort in Brian’s expanded role as a Posit Science brain fitness coach, and find it easy and fun to work with and learn from him.

Brian’s work ethic and dedication to our residents, their family members and associates are outstanding.  He is truly a Brightview STAR!

Dominic Lucidon, Associate of the Year – Hospitality

When Dominic Lucidon began his employment at The Manor at York Town, he was working part-time from 4:00pm to midnight.  He was in college so the schedule worked well for him.  He got to know residents and residents got to know him, and immediately they bonded.  Residents and associates alike recognized that he was responsible and dependable, and, as a result, he was offered a full-time position. It was working overnight security, and, as The Manor is an independent living community, he would be the only associate on duty between midnight and 6:30am (his shift was midnight to 8:00am).  He was disappointed that the schedule wouldn’t offer him the same contact with residents as his previous position.  He soon discovered that he would maintain his interaction with residents; it would simply take a different form.

Although Dominic was technically security, he found himself taking on a number of roles and responsibilities.  He welcomed them all, embracing the opportunities to interface with the residents at the community.  During the early hours of the morning, Dominic fixes broken computers, jammed paper shredders and middle of the night smoke alarms.  He cleans up from evening events and activities, which tremendously helps the morning crews. He carries residents’ luggage to their cars and helps them get off to a great start on their trips.  He delivers newspapers when the delivery man forgets, brews the best coffee in town and tackles anything else that needs to be done.  Dominic is also the first person many residents see in the morning when they start their day. Residents have been known to take the ‘long way around’ to ensure that they see Dominic and are greeted by his wide and warm smile.  “Mornings are great,” commented one resident, “Dominic is there with a smile…coffee is ready in the café and he always has a friendly greeting.”

Residents describe Dominic as reliable, dependable, conscientious, kind, helpful, very caring and extremely likeable.  They also say that they sleep better at night knowing he is there if needed.  Another resident stated, “Dominic only knows how to be helpful.  He is a treasure.  How did we get so lucky?”

Dominic is truly an associate worth honoring.
