Lifestyle Changes for Healthy Aging

healthy aging adults

As we welcome the milder days of spring, most of us have long forgotten our New Year’s resolutions. Although we were determined to eat right and exercise more in 2023, many of us have backtracked into our previous habits.

The best news is a lifestyle conducive to healthy aging is attainable and simple. When we focus on overall lifestyle changes instead of short-term diets or workout programs, we can more seamlessly integrate healthier choices into our daily lives. Try making some of these changes in stages, and you will be on track for a more active and enjoyable life.

Embrace Daily Movement

As we age, it’s most important to keep moving. Regular exercise keeps your bones, joints, and muscles strong while boosting your mood and energy levels. Whether you enjoy walking, swimming, yoga, tennis, or golf, the idea is simple: pick an activity you genuinely enjoy. When you are having fun, exercise won’t feel like a burden, and you will find ways to move your body every day.

Eat More of the Good Stuff

We all know the importance of eating well, but sticking to that commitment is difficult for many. Focus on the small steps you can take to up your nutrition game. Aim to fill at least half of your plate with veggies. Also, slow down! Savor each bite to notice the delicious flavors and when you are feeling full. Staying hydrated by drinking water will also keep you alert throughout the day.

Stay in Touch with Your Doctor

Make – and keep! – your regular doctor’s visits to put you in the best control of your health. By monitoring certain health indicators regularly, you can intervene earlier and prevent or slow the onset of chronic conditions. You can also talk with your doctor about your mental and emotional health, which are critically important as we age.
