For Maryland native Bernice Lebowitz, Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge has been home for two years. To anyone considering joining the community, she says, “Come here; this is home.”
Bernice lived with her husband and three sons in Randallstown. Her husband worked as a plumber, and Bernice worked all over, particularly at Shoppers for 35 years. She worked until age 87, and she is blessed with four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one granddog! One of her sons lives right across the street from Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge, so the community was a perfect fit for Bernice after she sold her home. She’s been here for two years and is always on the move in the community. “This place made me active again,” Bernice said. “I walk more now than I did at home.”
Bernice has a busy schedule of community events every day. She participates in the fitness activities like yoga, jazzercise, and walking club, and she enjoys expressing her creativity in jewelry classes. Bernice was even wearing an earring, necklace, and bracelet set she created herself! “I can’t think of anything they don’t have,” she said. “You will never get bored.” Bernice also loves to go out on the community’s shopping trips; however, she explained she doesn’t have any room left in her closet for anything else!
The residents and associates have become family to Bernice over the years. “The residents are delightful,” she said. “I can’t think of anyone here who isn’t nice. If you suggest something to the staff, they listen.”
Like a true Marylander, Bernice loves the seafood on the community’s menu, particularly the crab cakes and salmon cakes. Chicken salad, chicken drumsticks, and any dessert are also high on Bernice’s list of favorite dishes.
Most recently, Bernice celebrated her 90th birthday with her family and friends at Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge. When she came down to breakfast in the morning, her usual breakfast chair was decorated with balloons. Her son also brought a feather boa and golden crown so his mother could shine on her special day.
