Following college graduation and five years in the army, Harry Kahler spent his career working in the aerospace business. As a result, he never established deep roots as his family moved across the country. As a Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge resident for the past three years, Harry is a bit more grounded now.
Originally from upstate New York, Harry and his family lived all over the U.S. In his job, Harry provided technical support for NASA, the FAA, and the Air Force, to name a few. He even worked at the Johnson Space Center for a time and had a chance to fly the shuttle simulator!
“We always like the Maryland area,” Harry recalled. “We lived in Houston for a while, but the Maryland area is where we kept coming back.” In addition to his four children, Harry has ten grandchildren.
Harry and his wife moved into an Independent Living apartment at Brightview Mays Chapel Ridge after she broke her hip. As his wife’s dementia progressed, she moved into the Wellspring Village™ neighborhood, and Harry enjoyed visiting her every day. “It was nice that she could stay here,” he said. “Christine [Executive Director] was a lot of help at that juncture.”
“The supervisor and Resident Assistants there were very helpful,” Harry added. “I developed close friendships, and I still maintain those friendships.”
Harry is a dedicated member of the Men’s Group, and he enjoys the discussions between friends the most. “We have a small group that gets together for happy hour and dinner and hashes over the events and problems of the day,” he said.
Harry also spends a lot of his time reading, particularly historical fiction and nonfiction books covering the Revolutionary War and World War II.
